DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
A Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, and verifies the repair of heavy duty equipment. They work on different types of heavy-duty equipment such as draft shaft drive axle assemblies, final drive, structure components and accessories, tires, wheels, frames and undercarriages, and ground engaging equipment and attachments. Specifically, a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician:
· inspects, identifies, diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, and modifies systems, components, accessories and attachments (including checking for wear/damage/ defects/ problems, analysing performance and function, servicing, replacing, reprogramming, reconditioning, exchanging, adjusting, replacing and aligning)
· works on multiple systems such as: engines, fuel, electrical, hydrostatic and transmission, suspension, hydraulic, transmissions, and engine management, climate control, intake exhaust and emission control, steering, braking, drive, structural components, frames and undercarriages as well as ground engaging equipment
· An automotive mechanic, also known as a service technician or automotive technician, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains vehicles, performing tasks like routine maintenance, identifying problems, and replacing faulty parts.
Key Responsibilities:
· Diagnosing Vehicle Issues:
· Identifying problems using both manual and computerized diagnostic equipment.
· Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.
· Performing Repairs and Maintenance:
· Repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts, such as brakes, tires, and engine components.
· Performing routine maintenance, including oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
· Adjusting and repairing steering, suspension, and braking systems.
Other Duties:
· Following checklists and manufacturer specifications to ensure proper repairs.
· Maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
· Staying up to date with the latest automotive technologies and repair techniques.
· Following safety procedures and using tools and equipment properly.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
· Strong knowledge of automotive systems, including engines, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.
· Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
· Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment.
Problem-Solving Skills:
· Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
· Analytical skills to identify the root cause of issues.
· Communication and Customer Service Skills:
· Ability to explain technical issues to customers in a clear and understandable way.
· Good interpersonal skills to interact with customers and colleagues.
· Physical Skills:
· Ability to stand, bend, and lift heavy objects.
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Completion of an automotive technician program or apprenticeship.
· Relevant experience in Heavy Equipment repair and maintenance.
· Certifications like ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) are often required or preferred.
· A Motor Coach Mechanic, also known as a Truck and Coach Technician, specializes in maintaining, repairing, and diagnosing large vehicles like buses and commercial trucks, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
· Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of motor coach systems.
· Proficiency in using hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized tools.
· Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
· Ability to diagnose and repair complex problems.
· Other Skills:
· Problem-solving skills.
· Attention to detail.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Good communication skills.
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
· Valid driver's license and potentially a commercial driver's license (CDL).
· Relevant certifications (e.g., ASE certifications) may be required.
